  • Fifth Street Brew Pub Co-op

In January 2013, my “Fifth Street Brew Pub Co-op” video launched the “ReInvention Stories” series on the radio and internet through NPR affiliate station WYSO 91.3FM based out of Yellow Springs, Ohio. “ReInvention Stories” was a Localore transmedia incubator team under AIR (The Association of Independent Radio). The entire Localore Project was watched closely across the nation as these incubator teams developed new forms of public media. Our team canvassed neighborhoods throughout the city to find out how people have reinvented themselves in light or economic or personal changes. “ReInvention Stories” was chosen for Sundance’s lucrative Sun Media Lab in the Fall of 2012. I chose to tell the story of The Fifth Street Brew Pub Co-op, Ohio’s first brew pub co-op, because this group is onto something: they are revitalizing the neighborhood by renovating a historic building and stimulating the community socially and economically by turning the building into a member-shared brew pub and dining establishment.

I’ll relink this file as soon as I find a place for files which aren’t music, books, or videos.

This radio story, which never made it to the ReInvention playlist, opens with a fictional narrative, driven by voiceover and sound design, imagining the moment when a person realizes that it is no longer safe to drive due to eyesight deterioration. Next, we meet Dee who has been losing her eyesight for thirty years due to a genetic mutation called “retinitis pigmentosa.” Despite her blindness, Dee, with the help of a local artist who acted as her eyes, painted one of the massive art murals on The 3rd Avenue Art Project in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Dee reflects on how the creative process helped her to redefine how she sees her visual challenge.

    The Record Gallery

For 16 years, Philip Raimey worked at Gem City Records, an iconic music store located in the historic Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio. Philip witnessed the changing face of the industry as music moved into the digital realm, and he saw many music retailers, including Gem City Records, close. Philip and two other former employees of Gem City Records found a way to work with the changing industry; they noted that vinyl sales were on the rise, so they opened a collectibles store.
